Department: Contract Manufacturing Services (CMS) Reports To: Manufacturing Engineer Manager Job Summary The Tooling Design Engineer supports contract manufacturing operations by designing, developing, and sustaining production tooling, fixtures, work holding, and automation-ready solutions that enable safe, efficient, and repeatable manufacturing processes. This role focuses on improving quality, throughput, and equipment effectiveness through robust design, error- proofing (poka-yoke), automation integration, and sensor-based feedback. The Tooling Design Engineer works cross-functionally with Applications Development, Manufacturing Engineering, Controls, Quality, Purchasing, and Production to support new customer programs, production launches, and continuous improvement initiatives in a high-mix manufacturing environment.

Job Responsibilities Tooling, Fixture & Automation Design

• Design and detail prototype and production tooling, fixtures, and work holding for laser welding and related manufacturing processes from concept through production release.

• Perform design calculations, evaluate design alternatives, and conduct cost analyses to meet performance, quality, and budget targets.

• Incorporate automation concepts into tooling designs, including automated, semi- automated, and operator-assisted systems.

• Specify and integrate automation sensors such as photoeyes, proximity sensors, load sensors, pressure switches, and vision components.

• Design tooling to support quality and throughput with built-in error-proofing (poka- yoke) to prevent defects and reduce reliance on inspection.

• Ensure tooling and automation designs comply with safety, ergonomic, and machine safeguarding requirements.

Documentation & Engineering Support

• Create and maintain complete design documentation, including layouts, detail drawings, bills of materials (BOMs), ECRs, spare parts lists, and operation manuals.

• Design, build, test, and analyze prototype components and tooling assemblies. • Provide hands-on technical support during tooling build, debug, installation, and

production launch. • Collaborate with Manufacturing and Purchasing to ensure tooling designs are

manufacturable, serviceable, and cost-effective.

Manufacturing & Operations Support

• Support new product introductions (NPI), engineering changes, and production launches with robust, production-ready tooling and automation.

• Troubleshoot tooling, automation, sensor, and I/O issues on the production floor to minimize downtime, scrap, and quality issues.

• Participate in continuous improvement initiatives focused on automation, labor efficiency, defect reduction, and cost improvement.

Supplier, Customer & Cross-Functional Collaboration

• Work with external tooling, automation, and sensor suppliers to source, build, qualify, and improve equipment.

• Lead design reviews with Applications, Operations, Quality, and Controls to ensure manufacturability and customer alignment.

• Support technical reviews, audits, and problem-solving activities related to tooling and automation.

Job Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or equivalent experience with a minimum of six (6) years of design engineering experience.

• Strong experience in tooling, fixture, and/or machine design in a manufacturing environment.

• Proficiency with 3D CAD software (SolidWorks preferred) and Microsoft Word and Excel. • Demonstrated ability to deliver custom tooling that meets customer expectations,

performance requirements, and budget targets. • Strong hands-on troubleshooting skills and ability to support production. • Ability to travel up to 10% with travel to customer or supplier facilities for design

reviews, installation, and service support as required.

CAM & CNC Programmer/Machine Setup Professional, for qualification and runoff of new

machines, development and tryout of new cutting sequences, production support and customer

Hard Skills

 CAD/CAM experience with regards to programming of multi-axes multi-function machine tools

as well as a firm understanding of Macro and manual programming

 Solid understanding of the function and intricacies of CNC machines, workholding principles

and tool setup

 Strong background in applied metal cutting by means of turning, milling, drilling, etc.

 Experience with Sinumerik 840D control system

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

 Program and troubleshoot complex millturn parts from various industries using state of the art

CNC technology

 Discuss machining process related topics with customer and applications department at WFL

headquarters in Austria

 Conduct cycle time calculations and process sequence charts

 Majority of candidates work time will be spent on assignment at customer sites across the U.S.

with some time in Canada

 Assignments at customer sites consist of: qualification and runoff of new machines;

programming, development and tryout of new cutting sequences; production support; training

of customer personnel on programming and operation of Millturn machines

Soft Skills

 Must have excellent planning skills and be able to manage time efficiently

 Must be able to request and present information through spoken or written word and to

POSITION SUMMARY:

Position is responsible for performing troubleshooting, problem solving, preventative maintenance,

service, and repair of machine tools at customer site and on company facility. Incumbent performs

all job functions in a high quality, efficient and timely manner. Incumbent works as a member of a

team and assists team members as required. Makes recommendations to supervisor on process

improvements to ensure customer satisfaction.

 

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

▪ Performs troubleshooting and problem solving of CNC Machine Tools.

▪ Performs high quality, efficient and timely machine/tooling installation as assigned.

▪ Performs high quality, efficient and timely repair and preventative maintenance as assigned.

▪ Ensures high quality levels/standards in all work performed and follows all safety procedures

and requirements.

▪ Trains and instructs customers, and internal team members, on proper installation,

service/repair procedures for current & new equipment/machines and processes.

▪ Using Service software, accurately documents all actions and findings, completes, and

reports parts required and repair. Reporting is required same day, and at the maximum

within 24 hours.

Qualifications

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS:

▪ Associates Degree or certification in the troubleshooting, repair, and installation of CNC

Machine Tool Products.

▪ Minimum 2 years experience in the troubleshooting, installation, and repair of Machine

Tools Products.

▪ A valid Drivers License, a good driving record, and the ability to “legally” operate a company

“Service” vehicle or personal vehicle for company business. (You may be required to drive

your personal vehicle for business until a company vehicle is assigned).

▪ Good interpersonal communication skills. Ability to maintain professional conduct when

dealing with customers, peers, builder representatives and suppliers.

• Proven ability to read mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, and sequence (PLC) ladder diagrams.
