Job Title: Advanced Engineer, Electrical

Location: Ohio, USA

Salary: $140k

The Advanced Engineer, Electrical plays a key role in supporting the advancement of electrical systems for generator technology in the R&D division. This position involves contributing to the design of electronics, wire harnesses, industrial control panels, and HV system designs.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop electrical sub-systems and components for controlling advanced generator technologies.
  • Develop and implement power electronics circuits to support generator systems.
  • Work in a lab environment to provide hands-on support for system prototypes.
  • Design electrical system schematics, wiring harnesses, custom circuit hardware, and control modules.
  • Identify and support strategic suppliers for critical component designs and procurement.
  • Develop APQP materials, including FMEAs and DVP&Rs.
  • Build prototypes and support development, including the integration and troubleshooting of advanced electrical systems.
  • Lead cost model development and cost reduction initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with safety and material requirements for electrical system components in both demonstrator and commercial applications.
  • Perform analysis, design, simulation, and testing of electronic circuits.
  • Support mechanical packaging and system design to meet electrical/thermal requirements.
  • Work independently with limited supervision to evaluate, select, and apply standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria, using knowledge and judgment to make adaptations and modifications.
  • Perform additional duties and responsibilities as required for the business.

Education, Experience, and Certifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical or mechanical engineering.
  • 5+ years of experience in a regulated design environment.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Proficiency in designing electrification systems, including batteries, motors, inverters, PDUs, and embedded controllers, with adherence to high-voltage safety protocols.
  • Experience with power sub-system design, including AC/DC, DC/DC, DC/AC, EMI, harmonic control, and magnetics.
  • Skilled in electrical system modeling and simulation using tools such as MATLAB-Simulink, PSPICE, or LTSPICE.
  • Familiarity with packaging electronic components and interpreting electrical manufacturing documentation for commercialization support.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in designing and troubleshooting complex electrical sensors and controls.
  • Experience in circuit/schematic and PCB design using tools like Altium Designer, as well as wire harness design with 2D CAD tools such as AutoCAD or Zuken Harness Builder.
  • Understanding of electromagnetic compatibility, compliance requirements, and industry standards.
  • Proven experience in high-volume manufacturing of electrical systems with a focus on cost efficiency, manufacturability, serviceability, and durability.
  • Expertise in designing and implementing communication networks like CAN, Ethernet, SPI, and I2C.
  • Familiarity with ISO 26262, UL standards, and MIL specifications.
  • Highly collaborative, with a willingness to learn and adapt.
  • Strong project management and leadership skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with customers (internal and external), addressing their needs promptly and following through on commitments.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, good communication abilities, and excellent numeracy and spatial awareness.
  • Ability to understand and follow complex verbal and written instructions, demonstrating strong follow-through and a self-starting nature.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally (up to 10%) for liaising with engineering providers and hardware suppliers.
