Position Description
Job Title: Director of Technology and Scientific Development Dept: Exec Mgmt.

Position Summary:
This position is primarily responsible for the development and advancement the company’s
scientific testing capabilities. This platform leadership position will strategically determine the
course and payback of instrumentation and method development investments. Primary activities
will include partnering with the executive and commercial teams to identify growth
opportunities, assisting the board of directors with acquisition evaluation, and collaborating with
NSL’s laboratory leaders to expand the company’s next-generation analytical capabilities.
Essential Functions*:
Commercial Growth: Leverages his/her scientific and market knowledge to identify revenue and
profit enhancing opportunities.
• Partners with the Director of Sales & Marketing to evaluate current scientific
capabilities set as well as identify new opportunities for commercial expansion.
• Serve as the market-facing science leader for the company. Represent the
organization at scientific conferences and industry trade shows as a “thought leader.”
• Collaborate with the commercial team and laboratory scientists/metallurgists to
deliver educational webinars.
• Support new customer acquisition efforts by assisting with solution development and
customer education.
• Conduct continuous scientific research in support of materials testing. Meet with
other scientific thought leaders to develop new industry testing standards.
• Continue to expand the company’s industry leading Additive Manufacturing powder
and particle analysis capabilities.
• Support the development of marketing communication materials including brochures
and website content.
• Regularly publish and present scientific papers focused on materials performance and
testing.
• Provide the board of directors with a regular assessment of NSL’s capabilities,
competitive positioning, future growth opportunities, and general industry
developments
Acquisition Support:
Provides technical support to Executive Management team regrading due diligence efforts on
acquisition targets.
• Conduct a thorough review of the target company’s published testing capabilities and
certifications.
• Attend management presentations and lab tours during due diligence and provide a
comprehensive discovery report to the board of directors.
• Meet with target company’s scientific leaders to fully capture specific areas of
strengths and weaknesses.
• Provide Chief Development Officer perspectives and assessments of independent
laboratories for possible acquisition Responsible for conflict resolution on results
from internal and external customers.
• Discussions with outside customers regarding technical issues and project co-
ordination
Laboratory Development:
• Partner with laboratory leaders to identify instruments that build upon and expand
current testing capabilities.
• Network with testing instrumentation companies to uncover developing areas of
material testing technology.
• Develop and maintain long term technology development plan.
• Recommend process and facilities enhancement ideas that drive safety, efficiencies
and broaden overall capabilities.
• Serve as in-house scientific expert. Work with laboratory leaders and front-line
personnel to solve testing method challenges and unique customer problems.
• Help serve as a mentor to laboratory personnel and encourage participation in
continued scientific development, including white papers and conference

Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience):
• Masters Degree or Ph.D from a scientific field of study (Phd in a material science
discipline strongly preferred).
• Expertise in additive manufacturing and/or particle analysis strongly preferred
• 10 + years of laboratory experience strongly preferred.
• 5 + years of management experience in a lab setting plus basic lab training management
experience strongly preferred.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills, with a demonstrated history of
scientific publishing.
• Exceptional analytical skills.
• Must be familiar with common lab instrumentation and testing procedure BS degree in
Chemistry or a related field or equivalent work experience.
